The Portuguese-Canadian National Congress is a national organization that represents the nearly 400,000 Canadians of Portuguese heritage. Through our network of 35 nation-wide Directors, Delegates and local representatives, we speak on issues affecting the Portuguese-Canadian community, by engaging in regular dialogue with Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments, and participating in the Canadian Ethnocultural Council, as well as through community education and mobilization.
Some of the issues with which we have recently been involved include the integration of the Portuguese-Canadian community, the preservation of international languages, support for ethnic minority television programming, the fight against racism and discrimination, support for our public health care system, improving our home health-care programmes, and lobbying for amnesty for undocumented immigrants.
The Congress was created in 1993 during a conference held in Ottawa and attended by approximately 350 representatives of the Canada-wide Portuguese-Canadian community. Since its inception, the Congress has had 3 National Presidents and is now in its third Administration.
